On this day

Previous reports: Middlesbrough 1 Watford 0, 13/10/99
Celebrity birthdays: Margaret Thatcher (1925), Marie Osmond (1959)
Historical events: AC/DC's "Back in Black" went platinum (1980); A commercial flight record was set by an Air France supersonic jetliner for circling the Earth in 33 hours and one minute (1992); Authorities in Bogota announce a new plan to deal with "jay-walkers" - they will be dragged to the side of the road and ridiculed by mime artists (1996).
Saint of the day: Saint Colman attempted to pass through Austria on his pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Austria was at war at the time and he was arrested as a spy. He couldn't speak German and this was taken of proof of his guilt and he was hanged. The humility with which he went to his death and the fact that his body didn't decompose convinced his hosts of his sanctity. Bit late by that time, of course.
