Dhaka Hornets done us proud!
By Jeff Dell
The Dhaka Hornets did Watford proud in the French School's football tournament held in their school grounds in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Sponsored by the Bangladesh Watford Supporters Association (currently accepting applications for membership), the Dhaka Horns began well with a thoroughly convincing win over the poorly named Extreme. Resolute defending by Jack, Del Nino and Derrick provided the springboard to the success. Particularly impressive was two-goal Vetan Kapoor with 'Digger' Derrick doggedly decisive in a defiant defense.
The impressively surnamed S. Cordell and J.S. Hwang bossed midfield with impressive authority with Wallace linking between the middle of the park and Kapoor, the lone striker. There was little for the goalkeeper I.J.Hwang to do, other than applaud his team and spit into his gloves (why do keepers do that?).
Euroasia were a tougher nut to crack, despite the misspelling of their name. The Golden Boys lost two quick goals and were never able to get back into the game. Though always looking capable of scoring, they lost a third goal in the final minute to a lucky punt that surprised itself by wafting past the despairing hands of the keeper. Not.
Another late goal - this time by the Invaders - prevented the Horns from getting a second win. Despite dominating the match for its entirety, their failure to capitalize with a second goal was to cost them dear. No longer contenders for the main prize, honour was regained in Dhaka Hornet's final game of the tournament, an end-to-end thriller against the Dragon Flies. The only goal of the game was again scored by the impressive Kapoor though the scoreline gave little indication of the extent of the Horns total command.
Scores:
Dhaka Hornets 2 Extreme 0
Euroasia 3 Dhaka Hornets 0
Dhaka Hornets 1 Invaders 1
Dragon Flies 0 Dhaka Hornets 1
The multi-cultural star-studded cast of the Dhaka Hornets and their travelling supporters maintained Watford's tradition as a friendly family club. Through robust tackling, a buzzing midfield and an aggressive attacking display, the Dhaka Hornets won the hearts of the supporters, if not the tournament itself. Coming fifth from eight clubs, some consolation was taken from the award of 'Best Strip' of the tournament. The organizer of the tournament, Ousman from Cameroon, was enrolled as an honorary member of the Bangladesh Watford Supporters Association and awarded a T-shirt as thanks for organizing the tournament.
The day ended with fizzy drinks and chocolate cake.
