BLIND, STUPID AND DESPERATE

22nd October 2001
Bertie Mee, RIP

When Graham Taylor first came to Watford, he was a young whippersnapper and realised he required guidance to make the club into what it is now. One of those he sought knowledge from was Bertie Mee, who had seen it all with the Arsenal, even doing the double in the early seventies. Bertie Mee, Eddie Plumley and Tom Walley were the old shoulders he looked towards for guidance.

It is with great sadness we learn that Bertie Mee has passed away. Without his assistance, I am sure that even GT would not have achieved half of the successes we all enjoyed during that first era.

Bertie was a great manager in his own right. He was from the "old school", a gentleman through and through. Anybody having the pleasure of spending a few moments in his presence, listening to how the game should be played, would have heard "with passion but equally with fairness." When you think of GT, remember that Bertie Mee was the example he studied himself on. We all need mentors and Bertie Mee was GT's.

May he rest in peace in the knowledge he brought pleasure to thousands.
