BLIND, STUPID AND DESPERATE

Gone but not forgotten:
Oliver Squires

Position: Undecided
From: Youth team
Record: Played: 0
To: ??? - free transfer - January 1999
Career stats: Soccerbase
He was: Amiable

I have only seen Oliver play about five times - and that is, in nearly two years at the club, the equivalent of seeing Oliver playing in about 50% of his games.

He came to Watford having left Millwall in circumstances that were never entirely clear. Rumour had it that, on Tom Walley's return to Watford, he requested that young Oliver came with him as a seventeen year old pro - maybe an apology with it as Tom had taken Oliver away from Watford with him whilst young Oliver (aged only twelve) was earning rave reviews in the very young Watford teams.

However, his glorious return was hampered by the fact that he did not have any clear preferred position, and he kept getting injured. In fact it was nearly six months after he returned to the club that I actually saw him play! Ordinarily that would not be strange, as most people don't see Youth teamers unless they break into the first team. However for me, I go out of my way to see the Youth team, call me retentive if you must!

So six months in and I watched....

Sorry Oliver, but every time I have seen you play you do the same thing. You look quite good at controlling the ball, and then haven't got a clue who to pass to or what to do! I don't believe you ever talked to your team mates, despite being a really amiable bloke, as surely you knew that Wayne Andrews wanted the ball in front of him to run onto, or that Robinson or another wing back would be making a run down the line....

Alas...you never learnt, but for some reason seem likely to sign for Norwich!
