BLIND, STUPID AND DESPERATE

Gone but not forgotten:
Jamie Moralee

Position: Headless chicken/striker
From: Millwall - £425,000 - July 1994
Record: Played: 51(10) Scored: 7
To: Crewe Alexandra - free transfer - May 1996
Career stats: Soccerbase
He was: A big disappointment

It's easy to forget that, when we signed Jamie Moralee, we did so at a bargain price - Portsmouth had pulled out of a deal and Millwall were looking to control their wage bill. At the time, Furlong had just departed and we hadn't got a centre forward - the partnership of Moralee and Mooney never worked out, they were both support strikers. It took several games for Moralee to get his first goal, a coolly taken one-on-one against Luton, and for a while he settled in. Similarly, early in the 95/96 season he looked impressive to me - working hard, supporting well, scoring occasionally. But it seemed that every time he looked like getting going he got injured or lost his confidence and, in the end, his record was just not good enough to justify a place in the side. We have a multitude of support strikers at the club and, simply, Moralee is not going to get a place in the side when others (Phillips, Connolly) are fit. Had he played off a big centre forward to start off with, it might have been very different - as it was, he was a waste of money.
