Without a decent win all week
Report by Pete Fincham
Watford defeated a good Tranmere side 4-2 on pens in front of a crowd
of over five hundred in today's third and fourth play off in the Isle of Man.
In a game played in the warmest conditions of the week, Watford
disappointed again up front as the injured legions sat out the final
game.
Day in goal was superb and was Watford's man of the match, keeping a
blank scoreline in the first half. Notable saves from Taylor and Mahon
made the stand-in Watford keeper shine as lame defending on occasions
threatened to send Watford back to England without a decent win all
week.
Mooney was strong up front while Easton was again the pick of the
midfielders.
Goals came from Scott Taylor in the 80th minute when an appalling
clearance from Lyttle fell to him to beat Page for pace and
slot home.
However, with only seconds remaining, a cross field ball from Hazan
found Mooney whose left wing cross met Ngonge's head. The looping header
crept between the Tranmere keeper Achterberg and the cross bar to
equalise.
The 4-2 penalty win came care of goals from Easton, Johnson, Hazan and
Mooney while Smith again scored blank, hitting the left post.
Day saved well from two of Tranmere's four kicks to send the legions into
raptures.
The game finished and the fans took to the field where WFC beat a
strong bunch of scousers 8-5! Fincham scored a hat-trick for the first
time since he was 8!
