It wasn't a good start. The lack of muscle up front was painfully apparent as Moralee and Mooney struggled to make their presence felt. An opening day thumping in Sheffield was disappointing but heroics from Miller earned us a Coca-Cola Cup draw at Southend. We did everything but score against Grimsby, hitting the woodwork a couple of times, which meant that we had to wait till Southend for our first goal. In that game we outplayed Peter Taylor's Piss-Poor Army in the first half, with Ramage scoring from close range after Moralee had hit the bar, but let them back into it, a superb goal-line clearance by Foster earning a place in the Second Round. Swindon brought more goalless woe and a berth at the bottom of the table, before Graham Taylor's return to the Vic ended joyfully as Richard Johnson's last-minute screamer won our first three points and brought delirium to the home fans.
