Watford 1 Oldham Athletic 2 (Ramage)
Stoke City 1 Watford 0
Port Vale 0 Watford 1 (Porter)
Watford 1 Millwall 0 (Pitcher)
Portsmouth 2 Watford 1 (Phillips)
Watford 1 Bristol City 0 (Phillips)
Notts County 1 Watford 0

Two goals in the first ten minutes against Oldham ended any realistic hopes of the playoffs - we came back strongly but Oldham's dogged defending kept us out. Defeat at Stoke really was the end of the road, although a fortunate win at Port Vale thanks to a late Porter goal lifted spirits. The TV cameras saw a relaxed game against a lacklustre Millwall side, settled by a goal from impressive home debutant Geoff Pitcher. Portsmouth was atrocious - we even lost the relay race at halftime. The new Rookery was opened as we sent Bristol City down, a Kevin Phillips header covering up a half-hearted team performance. Phillips was magnificent, though. Relegated Notts County salvaged some pride due to an early goal gifted by a rare Miller error.
