Saint of the day: The story of Joseph is full of fabulous legends. Early mystery plays, attempting to explain the perpetual viginity of his wife Mary, often show him as a drunken old fool but by the Sixteenth Century the Roman Catholic church had stopped this sort of thing. They were unable to suppress the story of his flowering rod however. The suitors competing for the hand of the young Mary were all given a wooden rod. Joseph's miraculously bloomed, the others remained inert. In our post-Freudian world, this tale is worth a moment's thought. Careful now.

Further information

Nicholas Ralph's Numbers - Game 39: Along with all other two-digit numbers ending in nine, thirty-nine is the product of its digits, plus their sum.
Lucky animal: It's not an animal, technically speaking, but we're particularly fond of daffodils at this time of year.
Unlucky food: Number fifty-seven on the menu.
