Saint of the day: Saint Mamas, an early Christian martyr, was a shepherd boy, famed for his power over animals. He was arrested and thrown to the lions, who refused to hurt him. Mamas even had to tell off one over-enthusiastic lion for trying to protect him from the soldiers who came to finish the job.
