On this day

Previous reports: Notts County 2 Watford 3, 10/09/96
Celebrity birthdays: Ian Fleming (1888), Jose Feliciano (1945)
Historical events: Briton George Smith became the first person in the world to be arrested for drunken driving (1897), Hamida Djandoubi, convicted of murder, became the last person to be executed by guillotine in France (1977)
Saint of the day: Maradona may have the hand of God, but Saint Nicholas of Tolentino has the holy arms. Forty years after the saint's death, a German monk broke into his tomb and made off with his arms as relics. The next morning, the monk found himself back at the tomb, and since then the arms have bled whenever the church is in danger. Although the rest of Nicholas's body decomposed, the arms remained fresh and were given their own Chapel of the Holy Arms.
