On this day

Previous reports: Sunderland 2 Watford 0, 10/8/99
Celebrity birthdays: Antonio Banderas (1960), Lorraine Pearson of Five Star (1967)
Historical events: In Boston Massachussets the first milk inspectors were appointed (1859), Franklin D. Roosevelt was stricken with polio (1921)
Saint of the day: Saint Besse has the honour of being the patron saint of draft dodgers. This Italian saint was a member of the Roman legion who all refused to honour pagan gods. All were slain, with the exception of Besse who somehow escaped, and it is for this holy avoidance of military service that he is venerated.
