On this day

Previous reports: Wrexham 3 Watford 1, 19/04/97
Celebrity birthdays: Eliot Ness (1903), Ashley Judd (1968)
Historical events: Sir Francis Drake entered Cadiz harbour and sank the Spanish fleet (1587), Chelsea announced the setting up of an electrified perimeter fence to combat hooliganism (1985).
Saint of the day: Saint Expiditus may have been an Armenian martyr. Alternatively, rumours persist of a packing case once shipped from Rome to a convent in Paris. It contained the skeleton of an authentic but anonymous saint. The nuns translated the Italian special delivery label as the name of the saint, which became 'Expiditus' in latin.
