Celebrity birthdays: Mao Tse-Tung (1893), Phil Spector (1940)
Historical events: The coffee percolator was patented by James H. Mason (1865); the Man of the Year in "TIME" magazine was a computer. It was the first time a non-human received the honour (1982); Curtis Mayfield, soul singer and songwriter, died at age 57 (1999)
Saint of the day: Saint Stephen was a disciple of Christ, who was stoned to death and became the first Christian martyr. He is shown in art surrounded by the rocks (and not potatoes as many people think), which are now treasured relics in Rome. Stephen's feast was celebrated by good King Wenseslas and not-so-good kids who used to stone wrens on this day in his honour.
