On this day

Previous reports: Watford 0 Plymouth 2, 27/08/96
Celebrity birthdays: Confucius (551 BC), Paul "Pee-Wee Herman" Reubens (1952)
Historical events: TThe Declaration of the Rights of Man was adopted by the French National Assembly (1789); Charles G. Conn received a patent for the metal clarinet (1889).
Saint of the day: On this day in 1679, Saint David Lewis was condemned to be hung, drawn and quartered. The official executioner and his assistants had disappeared, leaving the bungling, amateurish hangman behind. The crowd, demanding proficient entertainment, threatened to stone the hangman, who ran away. In the end, a blacksmith was bribed to complete the execution. All of which has nothing to do with Walsall, but it's a good story.
