Saint of the day: St Thomas à Becket is one of the most famous of English saints. He was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral by followers of his former political ally and drinking buddy, Henry II. Although Henry apologised, the Pope was rather peeved at the murder of one of his Bishops and, to force home this point, made Thomas a saint within three years of his death.
