On this day

Previous reports: Watford 1 Portsmouth 2, 06/04/96
Celebrity birthdays: Butch Cassidy (1866)
Historical events: Richard I was killed by an arrow at the siege of the castle of Chaluz in France (1199), William J. Schroeder became the first artificial heart recipient to be discharged from hospital (1985)
Saint of the day: Saint Elstan, a Tenth Century monk and abbot, started out his religious career as a cook in St Ethelwold's kitchen. Elstan's most famous culinary achievement was plunging his hand into boiling water and bringing it out unscathed. All this was at the command of Ethelwold, who sounds like a great boss.
