BLIND, STUPID AND DESPERATE

01/02: Preview: Portsmouth
BSaD opinion
by Matt Rowson

How did they do?
Bumbled around unconvincingly for most of the season under the guidance of a succession of managers that you wouldn't trust to empty your dustbins, escaping relegation on the last day. Just to emphasise that you can't count on Pompey to get anything right, they also managed to play a key role in Palace's survival, losing to the Eagles and throwing them a lifeline in their penultimate game.

How will they do?
Pompey have been labelled big spenders, but the extent of their investment at the time of writing was the promising but raw Peter Crouch, plus some kids who Rix presumably knows from Chelsea. The signing of Prosinecki, rumoured as I write, certainly wouldn't be a dull one, although one has to wonder why, if he's still such a star, he's being let go by Standard Liege. Rix may know what he's doing - and Pompey will do well - or he may be floundering - in which case they'll struggle again. Best guess might be a more comfortable mid-table position with a wide margin of error either side...

Do we like them?
No. Fratton Park isn't terribly hospitable, however much of a show the Pompey faithful put on. They beat us too often as well, and then of course there's the Palace thing (see above).

If they were a tv or radio show, what would they be?
"Big Break". Rubbish, annoying, and won't go away.
