On this day

Previous reports: Bristol City 1 Watford 1, 13/4/98, Watford 5 Port Vale 2, 13/4/96
Celebrity birthdays: Thomas Jefferson (1743), Samuel Beckett (1906), Garry Kasparov (1963)
Historical events: A Vatican edict prohibited Roman Catholics from voting for Communists (1959), The world's longest doubles ping-pong match ended after 101 hours (1979)
Saint of the day: Saint Ursus of Aosta, a Fourth Century Sicilian, is invoked against faintness. Maybe that's because of the strength he needed to stand up to the wrath of his pagan gangster father, who was less than happy to have a Christian in the family. Ursus had to flee to the north where he became a bishop and is credited with reviving the celebration of lots of saints' feast days.
