BLIND, STUPID AND DESPERATE

01/02: Preview: Preston North End
Opposition opinion
by PNE fan Steve Gaughan

What happened last season?
The most successful season in 37 years in terms of final league position. This was a pleasant surprise to most PNE fans. The play off victory over Birmingham was the best night in years at Deepdale and the day out in Cardiff will be remembered for many a time despite the result.

What's going to happen next season?
The squad is very settled and I believe our strike force is amongst the best in the first division. I expect we will be difficult to beat and would hope for another play off finish.

Can you recommend a pub for away fans?
"The Deepdale" which is behind the Town End (south side) of the stadium has a good range of beers and is a short walk from the ground. I have never seen any trouble in there before.

What's the nearest railway station?
Preston Railway station. About 2 miles from the ground. Taxi will cost about 4 pounds.

Where is the best place to park?
The parking options are not too good around the ground. Probably best to find street parking and be prepared for 10 min walk to the ground.

Soundbites (from assorted Census correspondents)

"When Preston lost in the div 3 play offs they went up the next year as champs, when they lost the div 2 play offs they went up the next year as champs, so here's hoping."

"It was a privilege to watch North End last season (first time I can remember them in the 2nd flight)."

"Enjoyed my first visit to Vicarage Road last November."

"Alec Ashworth (from 1964) was a pratt"

"Bill (Wee Willie, in his Preston days!) Shankley said:-" Finney was the greatest that ever played, he could play anywhere, me I'd off played him outside, in an overcoat!"(or summat like that anyway!). To be fair I only picked him (in my all-time eleven) once, not 10 times!"
