Celebrity birthdays: Donovan (1946), Mark Spitz (1950), George Stephanopoulos (1961)
Historical events: The fire extinguisher was patented by Alanson Crane (1863), South African President F.W. de Klerk announced that black activist Nelson Mandela would be released the next day after 27 years in captivity (1990)
Saint of the day: Saint Scholastica founded a convent where her brother, Saint Benedict, visited her once a year. On his last visit, she was aware that she was dying and asked Benedict to stay a bit longer. He refused so she turned on the waterworks, in such a spectacular fashion that a tremendous thunderstorm blew up. So Benedict was forced to stay with his sister and Scholastica became the patron saint of rain.
