On this day

Previous reports: None
Celebrity birthdays: Samuel Pepys (1633), Howard Jones (1955)
Historical events: The siege of the Alamo began in San Antonio, Texas (1836), Robby Knieval made a successful motorcycle jump of 200 feet over an oncoming train (2000)
Saint of the day: Saint Mildburga comes from a high achieving family - her mother, aunt and sisters are all also saints. She is the patroness of birds because during her lifetime she was able to convince the birds of the neighbourhood to go easy on the crops until harvest time. Her most impressive achievements came after her death when, in the 11th Century, her grave was rediscovered. Wonderful cures were soon in evidence, including the regurgitation by one pilgrim of a tapeworm of record-setting length.
