Saint of the day: Born the son of a Syrian shepherd in the Fourth Century, Saint Simeon's flamboyant holiness got him thrown out of a monastery. His actions also attracted crowds to the mountaintop where he tried to live as a hermit. To escape their unwanted attentions he built a ten foot high pillar and took up residence on top of it. Unsurprisingly, this action made him even more of a spectacle and for the rest of his life he took to living on higher and higher pillars.
